Ohavi Zedek Synagogue was founded in 1885 by 18 Jewish immigrants from Lithuania. Today we remain the oldest and largest Jewish community in the state of Vermont, with over 360 family units. Our vibrant, egalitarian and inclusive congregation is committed to embracing tradition while actively participating in our changing Jewish world. Ohavi Zedek is a member of the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism. While we are affiliated with the Conservative movement our membership consists of individuals and families from every Jewish background serving the diverse spiritual, social and educational needs of the Jewish community of the Burlington region. We are a kehilla (a sacred community) where everyone is welcome, including intermarried and LGBTQ families. We strive to nurture the personal and shared Jewish identities of our members while at the same time giving expression to Jewish values through our commitments to the community at large.

Ohavi Zedek means “lovers of justice” and we honor those words through our efforts to improve our community through social action.  We strongly support the local refugee population brought to the area by the Vermont Refugee Resettlement Program, providing clothing and household goods to recently arrived refugees as well as hosting ESL classes daily. In 1980 we established a 60 unit HUD low income housing development adjacent to the synagogue to provide homes for the elderly and disabled. The property has been in continuous operation since that time. We offer a wide range of programming from free senior lunches to a community playgroup. And we support members of our community in times of need through our caring committee, providing free meals and other services.
