Phelophepa III Surgical Train Launch
Eye Surgery Auction in now open! Let's save some eyesight
The Eye Surgery Clinic Auction is now open. The auction will run from December 12, 2015 to December 24, 2015, with proceeds going to setting up the on-board eye surgery clinics!
We have some great items up for auction and some one-of-a-kind Nelson Mandela memorabilia for you. All the items have been hand picked due to their uniqueness and connection to South Africa and to our noble peace winner patron, Arch Bishop Desmond Tutu.
Please help us reach our fundraising goal to make these eye-surgery clinics a reality.
What are the Phelophepa Trains
The Phelophepa Trains are two unique trains that operate as mobile healthcare hospitals, bringing much needed medical and educational services to impoverished rural areas of South Africa.
With over 40 permanent staff and numerous volunteers, the train is more than a mobile hospital, it provides out-reach and educational programs and has thus far reached 23.5 million people since it rolled out in 1994, which makes it the worlds biggest mobile clinic.
There are 6 clinics currently on-board each train. The dental clinic, the pharmacy clinic, the psychology clinic, the health clinic, the educational clinic and the eye clinic
We need to extend the eye clinic to include surgery as this is crucial to South Africa's rural population. With over 100 people going legally blind due to preventable causes in rural South Africa, the need has never been greater for and eye surgery clinic on-board the trains.
The eye surgery clinics will complement the existing health facilities that the train already has, but as always, there are costs associated that need to be covered.
