John Muir Elementary has been serving the Ocean Park neighborhood faithfully since 1923 and has played a vital role in its history. Our beloved little school continues to mirror the community and has the unique distinction of being able to serve a culturally, ethnically and socio-economically diverse student body. Muir families believe that their children are more enriched because they attend a school that looks like the real world, and diversity is accepted, valued and celebrated!
We are a Title 1 school with over 50% of our families categorized as socioeconomically disadvantaged. As you can imagine, this makes fundraising a bit more challenging for our PTA at such a small school.
Regardless, we are committed to our goals for the 2018-19 school year. Along with increased inclusivity, we are working towards encouraging and supporting greater literacy at an earlier age, implementing afterschool tutoring for all students including English Language Learners, and providing more afterschool STEM activities.
Public Schools can be great when parents and communities are willing to invest in them!
