Description

Lloyd Sexton, a painter and sculptor (also known as Leo Lloyd Sexton Jr.) was born in Hilo, Hawaii in 1912, and settled in Honolulu in 1937 after studying art in Boston at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts. He spent several years in Europe, painting and traveling during the summers and studying at the Slade School of Art in London during the winters. In 1936 a flower painting by Sexton was exhibited the Royal Academy in London.  After returning to Hawaii, he became known for his floral, scenic and still life paintings and became part of an evolving decorative arts movement in Hawaii in the 1930s and 1940s.

Sexton was commissioned by Laurance S. Rockefeller to do a series of floral images of island flowers – some native, some not – to be reproduced, framed and featured in guest rooms when the luxury hotel first opened in 1965.  The originals were and continue to be exhibited in a meeting room known as The Sexton Gallery at the Mauna Kea.

When the hotel closed in early 1990 for extensive renovation, all of the framed Sexton prints became part of a giant garage sale.  The prints were still in very good condition and were very popular sale items and are to this day frequently seen in homes and businesses throughout the island.

Sexton died in Honolulu on March 23, 1990.

Considering its age, this particular print is in good condition as is the brushed gold frame.
