Bluet Damselfly Matted Photo, by Harold Sandford

Description
Damselflies are admired by humans for their beautiful coloring and amazing flight skills. Harmless to humans, they are great hunters and fierce predators, both nymphs and adults, of other insects such as mosquitoes. As adults, they grab prey in mid-air, using their legs like a basket to catch it. In the water, nymphs eat other aquatic invertebrates like mosquito larva, mayfly nymphs, and isopods. Damselflies need clean water as part of their life cycle, and NRWA is pleased that our rivers and streams are welcome homes for them.
Harold Sandford is a Groton resident and nature photographer.
