Paul Douglas Martins, a native of Attleboro, regularly exhibits with the AAM and was a finalist in the "Reign, Rain, Reign" National Juried Exhibit with his piece "Heaven and Hell." Known for innovation, he develops unique techniques in fluid art, including his popular #CorkscrewTechnique, seen in many works. Aligned with action painting, he takes painting airborne, casting acrylics that intertwine midair before landing in tight corkscrew formations on the canvas.
"You're a Mean One" was inspired by the artist's family tradition of watching "The Grinch." Martins created boulder cells (in fluid acrylic pours, these are large 3D cloud like forms) over black latex, using arctic blue, turquoise, and satin white enamel. As cells formed, a face emerged, which Martins shaped by manipulating the acrylic. The artist added black for hairline, obscure eyes, and a wry, Grinch-like mouth. This piece was made to bring holiday joy and perhaps become part of a new family tradition.
