Gertrude Ann Youse (a.k.a. Gay) was a painter, teacher, and a gallery director in Duxbury, MA. She supported many artists like Alice Neel, Harold Tovish, Lloyd Lillie and others where she exhibited their work at the Helen Bumpus Gallery in Duxbury that is still in existence. Her work is in many private collections and is also at the Ellsworth Library. From the 1970s until her passing in 1994, Gay spent her summers in Maine painting and teaching. The immediacy which best characterizes her work is attributed to the hours she spent working en plein air.
This is a signed marsh scape by Gay, typical of her "en plein air" style of painting.
