The March of Dimes is a national voluntary health agency whose mission is to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects and infant mortality. Founded in 1938 by President Franklin Roosevelt, the organization got its name from popular radio personality Eddie Cantor when he called on Americans to send a "march of dimes" to the White House to help fight polio. The March of Dimes funded research that conquered polio and today it funds programs of research, community services, education, and advocacy to save babies lives. In 2003 the March of Dimes launched a five-year campaign to address the increasing rate of premature birth.
