The Thoreau Society is the oldest and largest organization devoted to an American author. Since our founding in 1941 by Walter Harding, the majority of Thoreau scholarship throughout the world has been conducted by Society members. But what makes us unique is the interplay between the professional and non-professional scholars, educators, teachers, and enthusiasts who make up our membership.
