Special Instructions
Organized in 1966 in Gee's Bend, AL, as an outgrowth of the Civil Rights movement, the Freedom Quilting Bee has provided its members with a kind of freedom and economic independence they had not before experienced. Most of its founding members were farmers -- sharecroppers -- who in the 1960's became foot soldiers in the fight for civil rights. Their work has been displayed at the Smithsonian Institution and sold in major department stores in the northeastern United States.
The Bee is a charter member of the Federation of Southern Cooperatives/Land Assistance Fund. Its mission is to promote programs that increase income and assist in land retention and development especially for African Americans, but essentially for all family farmers. View more of the work of the Federation by going to Federation of Southern Cooperatives/LAF.
Note: Winning bidder is responsible for paying the cost of shipping.
