Description
This flying angel sculpture is not only beautiful but practical. It has an area behind the actual sculpture that is rectangular and could serve as a planter area or a catch-all type of container. This piece is great for the wall or table. The material used in the sculpture is an old oil drum. Oil drums are Haitian artists raw materials. The process of converting oil drums into sculptures is both a tribute to people's imagination and resorcefulness in the face of dire economic needs. The artist first removes both ends of the oil drum (ends are used for smaller sculptures and nest, the drum is stuffed with strawand lit on fire to burn off any residues. When it cools down, it is sliced down one side and flattened into a four by six foot piece of metal canvass. The artist with a stick of chalk draws out an image on thsi metal sheet. Next with only a hammer and a chisel the design is cut and the sculpture is made.
