3 Topps 1989 baseball cards: Padres John Kruk, Cubs Greg Maddux, and Braves Tom Glavine.


Kruk signed as a #3 Special Draft selection on June 13, 1981 playing for the rest of his career as a first baseman and an outfielder. He began his professional career with the San Diego Padres after being drafted in 1981 and made his debut with the Padres in 1986. Kruk was also the leader of the Phillies' "Macho Row" which led the team to the World Series against the Toronto Blue Jays. Kruk ended up with an overall batting average of 300, 100 home runs, and 592 RBIs. John Kruk is currently a baseball analyst for ESPN.


Maddux was drafted in the second round of the 1984 Major League Baseball Draft by the Chicago Cubs, and made his major league debut in September 1986; at the time, he was the youngest player in the majors. He was the first pitcher in major league history to win the Cy Young Award for four consecutive years (1992-1995). In addition, he has been awarded a record eighteen Gold Gloves. Maddux retired last year, 2008 at the age of 42. He had a win-loss-record of 355-277, ERA of 3.16, and 3371 career strikeouts.


Glavine was drafted by both the Los Angeles Kings in the 1984 NHL Entry Draft and the Atlanta Braves Major League Baseball organization in the 2nd round of the 1984 amateur baseball draft. Glavine elected to play baseball and made his major league debut on August 17, 1987. He is a five-time 20-game winner and two-time Cy Young Award winner, and one of only 23 pitchers (and just 5 left-handers) in major league history to earn 300 career wins. As of 2009, his 305 wins rank him as baseball's winning active pitcher. He is also known as an excellent fielding and hitting pitcher. So far Glavine has a win-loss record of 305-203, ERA 3.54, and 2607 strikeouts. He is currently, signed with the Atlanta Braves.
