The Cracker Barrel Old Country Store® Story

In the late 1960s, Dan Evins worked as a Shell Oil "jobber" in rural Tennessee. Driving from town to town, he would spend hours thinking of new ways to sell gasoline to folks traveling on the highways and interstates. All that time driving helped him understand people needed a place they could trust when they travel. So in 1969, Evins brought his latest idea to life when he and a local contractor scratched their building plans in the dirt on Highway 109 in Lebanon, Tennessee. This dusty blueprint marked the spot of the original Cracker Barrel Old Country Store location.

Evins believed a business for travelers should be convenient and trustworthy. He thought travelers would appreciate making one stop to get gasoline, a good meal, candy for the kids and some rest from the road. To persuade folks to stop, he blended his service station business with the atmosphere of the old country stores he remembered as a child. Those stores were a community's unofficial meeting place where folks gathered around a barrel full of saltine crackers to visit with friends and trade some common sense wisdom.

From our humble beginnings in the hills of Tennessee to a leading restaurant and retail concept nationwide, Cracker Barrel Old Country Store remains true to its mission of pleasing people, both travelers and neighbors alike. From hearty, made from scratch comfort foods to nostalgic gift items, there's no better place to eat, shop and relax.
